Default 2001 ML 320 intermittently won't start

My 2001 ML 320 (54,000 miles) intermittently won't start. When this happens, the starter doesn't turn at all - I hear an electronic-sounding "click" from inside the dash and a few lights in the instrument cluster go on. When I try again (right away), sometimes the same thing happens (no cranking and just a click), but so far the engine has started on the 2nd or 3rd try. I haven't had to wait for any significant length of time before trying the ignition again, as some other posters have had to do.

Also, after this problem occurs, the audio system doesn't work and displays "PLEASE ENTER SECURITY CODE" on the screen. After entering the security code, the audio system works again.

I've had this problem about 3 or 4 times so far, all in the past 2 weeks. Some of the posts I've seen suggest a fuel pump or fuel filter problem, but the symptom I get with the audio system not working and requesting a security code makes me wonder if there is a battery or some other electrical connection problem. Any ideas?

sounds like a simple weak battery causing the clicking sound to me. and it will ask for a code for the radio when the battery dies. or maybe a loose ground connection. or just loose terminals at the battery itself!!!

I agree with Chassis221, it sounds like a battery issue. Do you know how old the battery is? It may have expired due to age. That aside, start with the easiest thing first - make sure all of your connections are tight. If they are, take the battery to your local auto parts store and have them check to see if it's defective. Let us know what you find.

Thank you for the replies. The battery, I think, is 3+ years old (and there have extended periods where the vehicle was not driven much). So it may be timeto change it. I'll check the battery and connections and let you know. Thanks again!

I think your battery is fine, otherwise you would never start the engine. It sounds like bad connection on battery terminal or at starter. If everyone would anually recharge their battery as it is recommended, they would last twice a long (about 10 years, especially VARTA).
