Engine Problem
Hey, all! I have a quick diagnostic question that I hope someone may be able to help with. I have an 87 280GE that is running sluggish in the mornings. It starts fine, but when I apply the accelerator, it has quite a bit of hesitation, very little power and spews a decent amount of black smoke out of the exhaust pipe. If I drive it a few mile and then shut it off for a few minutes, then start it back up, it drives just fine. I have taken it to several mechanics and they are all saying that it is a $1500 to $2500 job. One guy says that they have to completely rebuild the carbuerator, another says that I have to replace the "warm up" assembly on the fuel distributor. Anyone recognise these symptoms?

RE: Engine Problem
if it emits black smoke, then it is running rich. if it is running rich, then the cold start enrichment is not the problem.
the problem could be minor as to make adjustments.

RE: Engine Problem
This really is quite easy- you just need to take off all the bits around the intake manifold side - air intake, throttle plate and all the other little valves and "things". Then take them all apart and clean with paraffin, then re-assemble after dry. It will purr as a kitten. Also look for some tech posts in the car section - the sedans of the same era suffer the same fate!
