I was driving back last night and ran out of gas....as a result the car jerked and the check engine light came on. I filled in the gas and drove it around and now its back to normal. But the check engine light is still there? Any reason? How can I switch it off?

You probaly neeed to have the computer reset. Prior to spending $75 to have it done, you may want to try unplugging your battery for an hour and see if that resets it. If it is not a hard fault, the light may not come back on. Although be on the lookout, as the light may come back on after 8 starts. Then you will have to have it reset by a technician.

Hope that helps

In many cases when the check engine light comes on, it's nothing more than the fact that your gas cap is not tightened enough, or that maybe its not even on at all. Your gas tank is considered by the governemt to be part of your emmissions, and so if someting fuel related happened, it might have triggered the light in an attempt to prohibit you from running your car in a way that might adversly affect the environment.

If your car ran out of gas the light will come on. If you just keep driving the light should go off after a certain number of enginestart/stop cycles.
