How many miles are the Mercedes good for?
I'm new to Mercedes but am going to buy a 300CE. Anyway, Most of the early 90's models I have seen are right at, or above 100k miles. How many miles can you usually get out of the Mercedes engines? Are they like a lot of American cars the start to crap out at 120k+? How about the computer functions of the car, are they prone to going out on high mileage cars? Same question about the transmissions. I appreciate your help on this.

RE: How many miles are the Mercedes good for?
A year ago I was picked up by a Mercedes taxi, model 123 from late 70, it had a 1,7 mill kilometres on the neck. Only change was a gearbox, somyears ago. That is not bad, but it was a Mercedes!!

Well, I used to drive Taxi back home in Germany (I am German), we only had6 or 7 MB, 280c,300c,some from the E-class and a 500 turbo all diesel. And those drivers drove everyday a different cap, and let me tell you they din't drive it like a lux.car. Those car where out on the street 24/7 never really had a chance to cool down.
Repairs ? the clutch(sp) . The oldest cap was a 300c and had wide over 1 million klm on it and was still good , there was never a engien trubble, brocken hoses, lecking oiltank, small stoff.
99% of all those cap companys use Mercedes diesel, maybe some BMWs, Audi.
But if you use your Mercedes( no matter what model) for short distance trips 0-30 miles with 55 -70 mlph,it'll die faster, much faster. MB is a car for long distance and so is Porsch, those cars a meant to be driven HOT and not just teased, you understand what I am saying. Sometimes I drive my MB up to 140 mph just to clean it out a bit, it hurts my heart to tease it with 70mph.
We even bought ourself a MB Sprinter Van diesel as a Camper Van just because of the engien. We said if we spend that amount of money for a camper than we have to be sure that the engien holds longer than just 200-500,000 mils, so we bought a Mercedes. The best we could have done.
................enjoy driving and be save out there.

But were the high milage cars the same standards today. Many had points today there are many computers and only dealers can service the newer cars. "my e500" I have run Fords for 250,000+ miles but then I could get repair manuals for that car. Anyone try to buy a manual for a 03 E500. If you have and own one please let me know how you bought it. Best of luck.. Jim
