Default Reattaching rear view mirror on windshield

A friend's '99 CLK320's mirror fell off the windshield. I reattached the metal plug after sanding the plug and the glass. I tried to "snap" the mirror assembly back onto the "plug" but broke the insides of the mirror... After two whole epoxy kits squirted into the mirror and reglueing the mirror frame, I'm ready to make another try.

It appears that the mirror side has a "snap in" bracket that goes over two grooves on the plug on the windshield, but it takes a LOT of pressure to get it on (hence, busted guts of the mirror assembly). Is there a tool or trick to reconnect the mirror assembly with the plug?... Do you "hammer" it on, parallel to the window glass??

Any help will be very much appreciated...

Paul
