Premium vs Regular Fuel?

Premium vs Regular Fuel?
There is no longer a 20 cent/gal difference in price, premium is now more like 40-50 cents/gal more than regular. It is beginning to make diesel look like a bargain. Would it hurt my 2004 C320 to run less than premium in it? With this trend in price continuing, I would think twice about buying another auto that requires premium petrol.

If you drive gently and it is not too hot, you are probably OK, with just a small reduction in available power.
If you make it knock and it then retard the timing, it is bad for the engine in the long run.
Buy GOOD regular (or better yet, mid-grade) gas.

Based on a 600 gallon an 10,800mile average year at 18mpg and pretending prices stay the same all year...
Premium at $3.85/gal
Regular at $3.40/gal
P=$2,310, $0.21/mile
R=$2,040, $0.18/mile
So, you're making a big deal over $270/year.
Replacement 2004 C320 engine: $2300, used
Which is the better value?

1 fewer $4.50 lattaes per week
2 fewer packs of smokes per month.
Then you can drive it as you would like to.
