Engine Clicking After Cold Start '95 C280
Hey everyone. First post here, but just wanted to say that I find this board to be really informative. Thanks for being here.
Recently, when I start the engine after 24 hours of non-use, the engine clicks for about 2-3 seconds. It revs normally, hitting about 2000 RPMS, settles down to 1100, then after a minute the normal 7000 or so...but those couple of seconds at the beginning worry me. I switched to synthetic about a year ago, but that clicking started a couple of months ago. My car is a 1995 C280. Thanks in advance for any advice. Keep up that great work here!

FYI, most engines run louder at idle on synthetic than on dino oil. This doesn't mean that the clicking is normal, but you may have had it before and now that it is louder, you notice it?
I just notice you said you switched a year ago so you're proly not just noticing a louder engine.
What weight oil are you using? In winter you want a low first number; like 5 or 0 so lubrication starts more quickly. I'm using what MB recommends which is 0w-40.

i don't have experience on 107 engine.
if the camshaft or the rocker arm is worn out, the clearance becomes bigger.
it can be adjusted maye by using thicker hydraulic valve compensating element.
make sure also that there is a constant flow of lubricating oil on the camshaft.

I use Mobil ` 0/30 and the clicking as lugnut mentioned is not continueous, and I agree it is the aluminum, it doesn't use a drop of oil between the %K oil changes I do and the noise does go away, so I am not particularly worries about it.
I had my tie rods on the front end replaced and the disc and pads, the squeal was so bad. Now that they are fixed the noise from the back brakes has manifested itself, guess I need disc and pads at the rear, I can feel the lip around the edge of the disc, It is going into the shop tomorrow. I also had the brake fluid flushed and bleed.

hey guys,
i have a 99 C280 and mine does the same exact thing. It's been dealer serviced it's entire life and the ONLY thing i can come up with is that it's due to normal engine wear. When your engine is cold, the pistons contract, like any material. When you start it, you are introducing a large heat source and causing that metal to expand. That "clicking" noise is just an "inefficient" cylinder warming up and expanding until the piston rings get the correct clearance to not click any more. How many miles are on yours? I have 87,000 on mine, but it still burns like a bat out of hell. Can beat most cars hands down. If you are really worried about it, try an additive during your next oil change that helps for high mileages. That should help with compression and get the "clicking" to stop.

I stopped worrying about it years ago. This clicking noise lasts no more than 10 sec. (It almost sounds like exhaust pipe line cooling down when you stop the engine, but with faster tempo.) So I regard it as the melodic tune of catalytic converter warming up. I feel better that way.
