Default 1998 C230 problems

Can someone help with the three problems I have with my C230.

Problem #1:

I have a 1998 C230 Benz (113,000 miles). The check
engine light came on and the code reads 0170. I know
that it can be the Oxygen sensor or the MAF sensor.
I'm not sure which one. So, here are my questions:

A)How can I tell which needs to be changed, without
taking the car to a dealer? For example, what are the
signs, if the Oxygen sensor is bad or the signs if the
MAF sensor is bad. I have a feeling it is the MAF sensor.

B) Do you have a diagram on how to replace/locate the
sensors ? Where is the MAF sensor on a C230 ?

Problem #2:

A) The 'EC' bottom on the climate control comes on
when I press the (-/+) button. In the past, it only
came on when I press the 'EC' bottom. Therefore, my
air conditioning will not start unless, I hold the
'EC' bottom for 5 seconds. Then the A/C starts and is
works okay until I turn the climate control off. Then
I have to start the process all over again to get the
A/C to work. Have any ideas how to fix this or what is
wrong with the climate control unit ? Or, maybe it is
the A/C unit ?

Problem #3:

A) The motor is making a crackling/clatter sound when
I press the gas pedal to increase speed. It sounds
like a diesal motor. Also, when the car idles, you can
hear a slight rattle - like the valves are loose. I
was told it could be the gasoline (but I use only
premium fuel). I was also told to clean the fuel
injectors ( have not tried this as yet). Do you have
any ideas what it could be ?

problem #1 & #3 sound like your fuel filter. find out if your filter has the built in psi regulator. if so, then the diaphragm is leaking air. if you have not replaced it in the last 50k miles, replace it anyway.

problem #2 is your refrigerant temp sensor. try cleaning the connector first, it's on top of your receiver dryer. if you decide to replace, make sure that there is a check valve in there or you may dump the freon all at once.

Yes, you did provide answers. They are listed below. I posted them for other members to see, in case they have similar problems.



1. it's a fuel trim malfunction which can be air leak,
fuel injector, or engine wear.
if the maf is bad, you will hear a crackling misfire
from the intake area during acceleration or
poor/sluggish acceleration. if O2 sensor, you get
check engine light...but it doesn't mean it is faulty.
it says it detects a fault.

Reply: I cleaned the MAF sensor and it fixed the problem.


2. your evaporator temperature sensor or
pressure/temperature sensor for refrigirant is faulty.
need to see the actual values...you can use the
pushbutton unit to see the fault. maybe the unit is
also faulty.

Reply: It was the temperature sensor.

3. was your engine a kompressor?
it can be a chain on the sprocket. if the rubber on
the sprocket is worn out, this can create such
rattling sound. Try to unplug the variable camshaft. does it still
sound?

Reply: The motor is NOT a kompressor. Problem still exist. Where is the variable camshaft plug located. Do you have a diagram ?

Problem # 1 was resolved. I cleaned the MAF sensor and it worked.

Problem # 2 was resolved. It is the temp sensor as you pointed out, but how do I repalce the sensor without causing the freon to leak-out. I tried to remove the old sensor, but a green liquid started to leak out. I immediately place the old sensor back in place. But now I can't figure out how to replace the old sensor.

Problem #3 still exist. I have no idea what it can be. However, I took it to an Autozone to troubleshoot and the following code appeared:

Troubleshooting P0301 "The PCM has determined that a misfire has occurred in cylinder #1"

It's the computer telling you that it has detected a misfire on that cylinder.

P0301 indicates an issue with the ignition coil/Spark Plug ... check the wiring

Have you checked the engine oil level?
When is your last oil-change?
Dirty or no oil can cause noise.

I have had this exact same problem before. Im not sure what the error code was, but it had something to do with a cylinder mis-firing. My car started out like yours, chugging a little here and there, and began doing it very badly as to where it would shake and give me only half the power untill i restarted the car. I had originally thought it was caused by water in my gasoline, but it was a bad wire.

The problem was solved by replacing some kind of wire relating to the spark plug. These cars and their electrical problems, jesus.

My 94 C280 has the same problem as the problem #1 -- Check Engine light is on. Please tell me how i could clean the MAF sensor. I don't know where it is located.
