Default '00 C230 Kompressor - P0170 Fuel Trim Malfunction, Bank 1?

I own a 2000 Mercedes Benz C230 Kompressor. The check engine light recently went on and when I had a friend put the OBDII on it, it came back as:

P0170 Fuel Trim Malfunction - Bank 1

He said that it is probably my Air Mass Sensor, but sometimes the problem could go away if I replace my spark plugs and clean out the Air Mass Sensor.

Has anyone experienced this problem and if so what do you suggest?

Thanks

Hey guy,
I've recently encountered the same problem a few months ago. I started out with the cheapest and simpilest fix, which was to replace the sparkplugs. I reset the codes and it was fine for a week. The engine light came on again, so I replaced the air mass sensor. Two weeks later, the engine light came on again. I went by autozone and had them do a reading on my car and the store manager said that I more than likely needed an oxygen sensor. I was also getting codes for misfiring in the cylinders. He said that those codes would disappear once I installed the O2 sensor. The part is on back order now, so I won't know for sure if that is the final fix until it arrives on the 24th.
One more thing, from reading the archives on this sight, I learned that cleaning the air mass sensor with any kind of cleaner could be bad news.It is apparently very sensitive. If you do find that you just need an air mass sensor, I would try ordering it from this site www.autopartswarehouse.com/products/. I shopped around and found that they had a better price than other sites. I paid $200, and other sites sold the same thing for 300 to 390. My car is a 97 C280, so the price might be different for yours.
Good luck.

Air mass meter is most common on these cars. with code p0170 fuel trim
As for the misfire on the C280, check the coils and wires!!! These cars are very good at detecting bad O2 sensors......
P.S. search E-bay for
MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR MERCEDES ML, C, E, S & CLK ClassI have seen them as low as $90.
