Default W123 (230) hard to cold start (sometimes)

Can anyone help solve the problem with my Dad's car. It was bought new in Germany to the Australian specification and was shipped out to Australia a few years later. Dad is the original owner. Was servied by a MB autherised garage until about 8 years ago. Still serviced by a very good garage (just can't solve this problem). Trust me, this car has had no expence spared on it.

W123 Model 230 March 1977 [300,000km] Chassis No. 123023 Engine No. 115954

The problem has become steadily worse over the last 10 years or so. Carburettor is a Stromberg 175CD that was completely overhauled about six years ago. Cold starting problem did not significantly improve.

The car starts easily but idles erratically [not running on all cylinders?] and often stalls until warm which takes about 5 minutes. Once started and run until warm, the car is fine for the rest of the day. If used very late at night, the next morning there is no problem. The car seems more likely to stall and/or run erratically on cold, damp mornings. The problem is thus
much more of an issue in winter than summer. The inside of the distributor cap was painted with shellac to reduce any tracking effect with condensation without much improvement. Recently a new cap and rotor have been put on.

Anyone know what is causing this problem????

Thanks for any help
