Question Self-leveling rear suspension

Does anyone know just how the self-leveling rear suspension on a '94 E320 wagon performs the function of a shock absorber? Do the hydraulic struts have shock valving built into them? I've had one of these great wagons for many years and still think it is a keeper, but it has always been too soft in the back, especially with a load. Over the years I have replaced the actuators, the level control and the rear springs, but nothing has changed the ride much. The system does the height adjustment thing just fine, it's just too soft. I'm thinking that if I knew how the damping was accomplished I could fix the problem.
