Default Old timer 1973 230/6 carburetor question:

I own a 1973 230 /6 automatic Mercedes it’s a family heirloom, direct import from germany, still in original condition (engine) with 120.000 original miles on the car. The big problem I have with this car is that it will not stay running, gas line, fuel line, fuel filter, coil, and tank(cleaned) has been changed. all have been changed, and nothing! It’s is the rear carb that seems to be the problem, if you pour gas into the carb, it will run for as long as the gas is in there. The car is in the shop since October. Can some one help? Please!!!

Default RE: Old timer 1973 230/6 carburetor question:

You know that multi-carbs have to be synchronized, right?

Even brand new carbs will run horribly if they are not synchronized properly.
Cars with multiple carbs need re-syncronizing after most any fuel system work, change in climate or season.
I'm not talking about the fuel mixture, I'm talking about placing an air-velocity meter on each carb, and adjusting the throttle linkage to make each velocity match.

This task of synchonizing is tricky, and is one of the reasons production adopted fuel injection.
Many FI mechanics today will not have a clue as to how to do this.
Local neighborhood shops might be baffled.
You might have to find an old-timer, who has worked with multi-carbs.
Porcshe 911 mechanics are often very familiar with multi carbs.
Sometimes hot-rod enthusiasts are familiar with multicarbs, from using multi webbers.
Certainly, people familiar with vintage cars can handle it.

If the carbs ARE "balanced" or "synchronised", then you may have debris in the carb fuel jet or the carb's micro filter could be clogged.

If you need more help, let me know.

Charles
