I need a new heat blanket for the hood. I've read some articles on it, you use a combination of clips and glue to install it. The only problem I see is gravity working against me. Any tips for holding the blanket up against the hood while the glue dries?

 

1995 SL500 I was more concerned about paint bubbling than noise reduction. Plus, it now looks like crap since someone ripped off the old one and left pieces of it and old glue all over the hood.

 

We did the heat blanket. My wife did a bit of scraping spread out over several days with a sheet over the engine to catch the mess. Once we were ready I used construction adhesive as the glue (I learned about that in a muscle car forum). We put in all of the clips to hold the front then I spread the glue all around with a caulking gun. I held it up while my wife smoothed it out and tucked it in to the sides of the hood. We then took several pillows, put them on the engine then closed the hood. That molded against the pillows and held everything in place. The next day we took it off and it looked perfect :-) I wish I would have thought to take some pictures of the work in progress but I did get one of the finished job:

 

With the sl500, is this (the hood pad eventually crumbling) typical? My 2000 sl500 hood does look terrible on the inside as it's pad was also removed. Was thinking of replacing it till I saw this post. Thanks!

 

Almost 3 years later it's still looking like the day we installed it. It was done purely for cosmetic reasons, as in it was a lot easier to cover up the crappy old removal job with another heat blanket than it was to scrape off all of the junk left behind. After a minute of rational thinking the concern of paint bubbling was discarded as most cars on the road don't have heat blankets and bubbling is rare. It was well worth the effort.
