Default 76 300D overheating

I recently was driving and noticed my temp gauge reading very hot, I saw water dripping from underneath the motor and replaced the waterpump and thermostat and radiator. The temp gauge on the dash cluster is still reading hot in the red after running for awhile, about 15 minutes and it's in the red. When I look at the motor it is not overheating to the best of my knowledge. I think it's a bad temp sensor btu when I disconect the wire located above the thermostat housing nothing changes on the temp gauge, is there another temp sensor, and is this common? thanks
