Default 420 sel starting and stalling problems

I have a 89 420 sel that has recently begun to give me problems starting. I get in the car and it starts right up and runs great, I get to work 5 min from my house and when I come out of the office to go home it won't start. Turns over great but won't start. Yesterday I finally drove it a longer distance and it stalled while driving, it started a couple more times and let me go about 300 ft each time, but eventually quit and had to be towed. Any ideas?

Default RE: 420 sel starting and stalling problems

I am gonna say it may be a fuel pump relay. Extremely common during summertime. It should be located on the firewall next to engine control unit and klima relay. Other than that, i'd say possibly a "green lead" which is essentially the same as a crank position sensor but mounted inside the distributor and runs to the ignition control unit. Also, dist cap and rotors have trouble with the heat if the contacts are faulty. With this vehicle, there are many variables which can cause so many problems but I would start with the fp relay first. You can take the fp relay casing off and inspect for a solder joint which breaks and depending on temperature makes contact. Eay to do if you know what u r looking for but probably difficult if u don't
