Default 2006 C280 4matic check engine light

Hi, I have 33k on my 2006 C280 4matic, I was driving home and Felt a little Jerk when i was accelerating, then my check engine light went on, can anybody tell me what could have caused this, i have already read the owners manuel and followed all the basic trouble shooting steps, i am making an appointment first thing in the morning, i just dont want the car to die on me, BTW i just purchased this last week.

Thanks in advanced.

Hi,
The jerk you felt was possibly the engine misfiring for some reason. This is detected by the on board computer and a code stored in the ECU. It may have been some irregularity in the way the trans shifter gear. Auto?

The code will tell the story about what is wrong and without this bit of data it is well nigh impossible to pinpoint the problem.

Without knowing the cause I cannot guarantee that the car will be OK till it is fixed. Keep your fingers crossed. Usually the CEL is only a warning to take the car to the garage rather than disaster is about to occur.

Yep its an Auto, earlier this week the car was stuck in 3rd gear or so and my RPM was at like 4-5k, and i wasnt even using auto shift. I called the service dept and he told me to turn the car off then back on and that seemed to solve the issue. Thanks for the info Stuart.

The advice re ign off is correct. This resets the ECU and often clears a transient problem.

The problem is why it stuck in 3rd at 4/5k rpm.

Sure you didn't move the gear lever sideways and select Tip (manual change)?

Quote: "i wasnt even using auto shift" Not sure what you mean? By auto do you mean Manual shift = Tip? or do you mean you were in Manual and had 3rd gear selected...but I don't understand the stuck bit then.

Anyway all appears OK now.

Stuart.
