Default Years, engines, power numbers?

Sorry for the noob question, searched around quite a bit, can't seem to find what Im looking for.

What Ive seem to have found is the om617 all mech, was run up to 85. From there, I run into all kinds of variables, some in the US, some not. So confused!

What Im really wanting to find is what engines, were in what cars, say 90+, likely I dont care about past 2000 for complications, costs etc. Reliability I can usually find on my own, power numbers would be nice as well.

Im thinking of a diesel conversion, so I care little about the car itself. Been looking at putting one into a 4runner or possibly landcruiser, and remain emissions legit, which since Im only looking at 90 and newer, the old om617 is out of the options. Wanting a reliable SUV, with 20+ mpg, and figure I should be able to get into the high 20s, maybe 30.

Thanks for your info, links, and sorry again for dragging the forum down to noob question!

Default

Just for common, looks like
OM602.962 the 2.5L in 90-93 300D
or
OM603.971 - 3.5l inline-6 turbocharged, 148hp, used between 1992 and 1994. "Rod Bender"

Did the 3.5 have routine rod failures? Or jut a nickname?

Thanks for the info, sure wish MB hadnt changed the engine s frequently!
