What ATF for Manual Trans Getrag 717.400
Hello,
I know the FSM says AFT for the manual transmission, but what kind is the preferred or best ? I believe "Type A" would have been the most likely choice for the time, e.g., 1980's. There weren't as many options in the 80's as there is now for different types of ATF. I see a lot of posts on different forums where folks suggest all kinds of fluids, but just wondering if anyone has a definitive answer? Thanks in advance.
Application: W123 Chassis Platform, Getrag 717.400 Five Speed, mileage unknow, but it does "grind" when shifting from 3rd back down to 2nd.

Fluid Change Success
Thank you FI !
I drained the rich, black magic out and added Dexron to flush. Drove it about 1-2 miles and then added the good stuff. Got a super deal at Autozone for $5 bucks a quart. She drives SUPER NICE now, except that nasty grind shifting 3rd down to 2nd unless I am going about 5 MPH. However, super pleased right now. I just need to re-torque the drain plug and fill plug. I tightend them until I think I was about to tighten them too much if you know what I mean. So, I hope I didnt hurt anything. However, thank you !

Morning,
It is a 300D NA. The body is actually a W123 240D and the engine came from a 1981 or 1984. I just bought it last Friday, the 26th. A total rust bucket and virtually everything on it is mechanically or maintenance wise in need, but I plan on driving it until the body breaks. Literally that bad. So far, after pressure washing everything, I did the oil change and filter, trans oil, diff oil. This weekend I plan on adjusting the valves and new injectors. I am desperately searching for the throttle linkage set up. I will post a picture of that magic tonight. The PO was very creative, not only in his repairs but his description of the car before I picked it up. So, if given lemons, make lemonaide. LOL. Today's task is to adjust the emergency brakes since I got none right now. That is a major deal for me now.
I have a dumb question: What is double clutching ?
In any event, again thank you for the info !!!

Howdy,
Everyone is looking for the Getrag 717.400 five speed. I actually have 2 entire set-ups. I have another project cooking. I really did not want another project as I thought this car was "OK" I got one mechanical headache after another.
You wouldnt have a 300D NA NON-EGR manifold for sale or the throttle linkage ? I am looking for the round hole bottlem mainfold and not the squared bottom one (W115) (f that makes sense). I think blocking off the one I got would be simple, but I rather avoid that.
