Default Gas gauge and odometer stopped working

I have a 1984 turbo diesel 300 and the gas gauge and odometer just stopped working. Can I fix it on my own or do I need to bring it in to my mechanic. Any response is welcome, appreciate the help.

I think you have two problems there, the oddometer is one , and fuel guage is another ..The oddometer you need to pull the speedo and clocks out in one. you will get a better idea if you go to you tube and see how its done.It was the firs job i had to do on my w124 . The pot gear had come loose on the spindle, and i put a drop of supper glue on it and it did the job fine. If you dont want to repair it you can pick up another speedo ,in doing that you may solve the fuel guage problem as well ..Just pull it out making sure you put all the bullbs back in to their right places .I use a camera to take los of pictures as i go on ,and mark up with felt pen.,,

Yes and i know that .But as the fuel guage is in the speedo head ,and if he wants to replace the speedo head, then it it will come with another fuel guage inside it.This might fix the problem , and if the problem is still there , then its the sender in the tank. Or take speedo out repair the trip inside the oddometer put it all back to find the fuel guage in the speedo is the faulty part .Do you see the way i am going now ? Or do a short to earth test first on the tank sender and see if its the sender or the guage .
