Default 1993 300D 2.5 Turbo

I have a couple of questions. I recently acquired a 1993 300D and am having a few problems with it.
First, it seems to me like the turbo is not working. The car has horrible pick-up. One of the reasons i think it is the turbo is because i can not hear the typical "whining" that usually comes from a turbo. Is there any way to check and see if the turbo is working or not?
Second, almost every morning when I start my car the tachometer does not work. Sometimes after driving the car around for a bit it starts to work. The reason that this bothers me is because when the tach is not registering the A/C does not work and the car runs much more ruff than it normally would but when the tach kicks in everything goes back to normal. Anyone know why this might be happening or how to fix it? Thanks a lot!

I checked the battery voltage whilethe carwas off and when it was running with the tach not working. OFF it was about 12.5.ON with tach not working it was 12.5 also. Haven't been able to get the tach to work recently so couldnt get a measurement. Is it possible the computer is going bad?

Is there any wayto check the alternator to see if it is in fact putting out "dirty voltage"? I just don't want to buy a new alternator if its not necessary. Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it!

So I checked my Overvoltage protection relay and that appears to be the problem. The fuse on the top of it is fine but the actual relay seems to be bad or going bad. I checked the fuse and then tapped on the little box and everything on my car seemed to work perfectly. Then it all stopped so I tapped on it again and everything worked perfectly again. It seems like I have to tap on it at least once every day in order to have my car run smooth. Do I need to change it or just fix it? Also, I exposed it but could not, for the life of me, figure out how to remove it. Is there a secret?

Recently my car has been having some serious transmission problems. I first noticed it when the car refused to shift into 4th gear. Later that day it stopped shifting into 3rd gear and now it wiil not shift into 2nd gear. I can get it to change into 2nd if i put it into N, then rev it up a bit then throw it into gear. Otherwise there is no gear changing going on. I went ahead and changed the fluid and filter and the problem still exists. I did however find a fair amount of metal shavings in the pan. Can anyone tell me whats wrong with my tranny?
