marbry, when you say nothing, do you really mean absolutely nothing? Do any dash lights come on or instruments move? Do the keyed accessories work?

Default 1979 SLC Starting Problem

Sah,

The dash lights come on, keyed assy's work, sometimes there is a 2-3 second delay then starts no problem. I am thinking ignition switch - is this a common problem? at first I thought the neutral safety switch but it will not start in nuetral or park, turn the key a few more times and she fires right up.

This is an intermittent problem about every 10-15 times I go to start her.

That delay makes me think that it could be solenoid related, but you'll have to checkto see if you have juice to the starter to make sure. The intermittant situation doesn't help. You might have to resort to using a test light with clamps and sitting there starting and turning it off until it won't crank. If there's no light with the no crank, I'd repeat the test with the light clamped to the start terminal on the switch. If there is a light, I'd checkall the starter connections and probably pull the starter for testing on the bench.

I worked as a mechanic in an independent shop in the late 70's and early 80's and I replaced both ignition and neutral safety switches.I wouldn't say that it was common, however. I will say that if you get two vacuum lines reversed on the ignition switch of a 300SD, it will onlystart every other time. Whoops.
