as much as i like telling people that my 82 240d only has 60,000 miles on it, a working odometer would be nice. everything else on the dash works fine. i heard that it might just be a loose part that needs to be glued back on, but i don't know. thanks guys.

 

Standard issue on those models.
I pulled out 3 odometers from junk yard to get one working. If you think you can fix it, good luck.
Some of those gears works on friction and are not serviceable.
I might have some spare parts from the car I sold. Need to check my garage.

 

can i take the gears and not the display? the only one i can get my hands on has like 300000 miles and i don't like it.

 

To get to the gears you need to disconnect, thiner than hair spring.
I have 2 speedometers in the garage. Both worked, when turned by hand. One is having 85 MPH range (hey, it is collectible) and the other 140 MPH.
You can have both for shipping and $10 handling charge.
Also have clock and other gauges.
Next week I might go to junk yard, so if you need something let me know.
