Mercedes recalls 1.3m cars
Philip King
April 02, 2005
FAULTY brakes on thousands of Mercedes-Benz will force owners back to service centres in the company's biggest recall.

Mercedes will alert 8500 Australians who have bought cars since 2001 - some costing $300,000 or more - as part of a global fix for 1.3million vehicles.

High-tech electronic brakes fitted to SL roadsters and the E-Class range of sedans and wagons needed an extra bracket fitted, Mercedes Australia spokesman Toni Andreevski said. Some might also need replacement pump assemblies because of a faulty production batch.

Mr Andreevski said he was unaware of any Australian incidents but that some brake failures overseas had resulted in property damage.

There were no reports of injuries, and if the electronic system failed the brakes would still work, he said.

Mr Andreevski said the recall had been ordered by new Mercedes global boss Eckhard Cordes to address the company's recent reputation for declining quality.

In addition to the brake recall, Mercedes said 12,000 owners of cars with V6 or V8 engines would need to be checked for electrical faults at their next service.

So what are you people waiting for? Go get your car's brakes fixed!
