Default Do Colored Waxes Work?

I have seen somewaxes advertised that claim to contain the same pigment dyes as used in the original paint. I have a 1990 560 SEC, gray in color with a couple of "light" spots on the roof. Does this type of wax work, or at least give the illusion of hiding the lighter areas? If not, any suggestions short of a new paint job, which I really would like to avoid as 99% of the car's paint is close to perfect, or at least as close as one can get for a 1990 auto. Thanks Bob
