Default 1988 560 SEL ABS caution lite on and engine revs

Sporadically, the ABS light comes on and the engine (gasoline) revs to about twice its normal level. Then the condition corrects itself light goes out and revs slow.

Someone suggested that it might be a voltage reducer malfunction and told me that it would cost $170 for the part. Ouch.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Jim

To tell you the truth, I have no idea.

My car did this for a few days a while back, reved to a about 1300 rpms, and then it corrected itself within a few mintues. Then it never did it again. I thought it was a little strange.

Is yours a W126?

Thats does seem like the part that could wrong however i replaced mine and it was only 85 bux in 2005. Its the part under the hood next to the firewall with the red top and the 10 amp fuse. i bought a KAE http://www.kae-automotive.de/the part looks like one of the red top ones in the pic on the home page. Got it from a local foriegn parts supplier.

My 1992 500SL exhibited the same symptoms you describe. Turned out to be the voltage regulator; repaired for a very reasonable $300, esp considering intermittent high revving at startup could rip out the transmission putting it in gear.
