S Class Towing Report
May 2
Reporting back with results from my previous post.
Prior to departing from NJ to Fl with 5 x 8 enclosed utility trailer tagging behind my 93 300 SE, I elected to have my local mechanic in Rockaway, NJ (Tommy, 973 886 5729, Good solid Mercedes technician, 20-plus years of experience, Highly recommended) replace the shocks, upper and lower control arms, motor and transmission mounts, ball joints, oil and trans service and a variety of bushings.
I suspect the trailer was overloaded by 500 to 750 lbs, (gwv @ 1550 lbs plus the overage).
The car performed beyound my expectations. I had the cruise control set on 64 mph +/- while turning just less than 2500 rpm.
Engine temperature was steady at +/- 85 C. The automatic transmission down shifted nicel and in a timely manner to compensate for inclines.
Gas milage was just under 17 mpg over the course of the 1260 mile trip. The ride was so nice and compfortable I drove straight through over a period of 25 hours, (figure about 2 +/- hours for fuel and food stops).
Several times I had to punch it get out of the way or around a stray vehicle. The engine responded quickly and seemed to be able to cruise at a higher speed if needed.
Thanks again to all that commented on my first post.
I truly enjoy reading the Mercedes Forum.
